Past Tastings: The Annual July Picnic Reviewed by Tom Carroll
The mid summer's day picnic was enjoyed by dozens of joyful revelers. Many dishes of all shapes, sizes, colors and textures laden the table. Their aromas danced exotically on currents of air seducing the olefactory senses. Cuisines of California, India, Pacific Rim, America and all manners of fusion were represented and artfully prepared by our resident gourmets.
Space prevents me from waxing eloquently on about each and every dish however the effort and execution of Matt and Abbie's shish-kabobs grilled to order and Tim's fruit pies a la mode accompanied with numerous sweet nectars were quite a delight. Many a tasty wine washed down this feast and fueled a myriad of conversations of winespeak, newspeak, youspeak and Ispeak.
As serious digestion progressed, the annual Intergalactic Cross Country Bocce Ball Tournament commenced. Eight two-person teams played for fun and competed for fame and glory. The competition was fierce as round after round was played. The course was brutal and unforgiving. Among the athletes was an even mix of seasoned professionals and glassy eyed novices. The learning curve was steep if not vertical and so was the terrain. Many strategies were employed but in the end luck won out. The prevailing team was Joan Wykoff and Tom Carroll. A hearty congratulations go out to all those brave athletes who trained long and hard for this event tirelessly smiling with red stained teeth through all the chaos and adversity that fans of this game have learned to treasure.
This writer can not recall ever having more fun. The picnic at Kamiak Butte was truly a hoot.
